Piano Lessons

Based in Mount Lawley and the North Perth area, Nicholas has much experiencing teaching piano students of all ages, levels and abilities, from complete beginners to university level. He specialises in classical music styles, and can assist with preparation for music exams, music theory, or simply help you learn how to play your favourite pieces, just for fun. Nicholas holds a PhD in music, which has equipped him with a unique specialist knowledge in relation to piano performance and pedagogical history, and endeavours to keep up to date with the latest research and theory on piano pedagogy. In addition to his academic qualifications, Nicholas is able to bring his own extensive experience as a pianist working in a variety of contexts. He can coach you in the finer points of piano technique, practice methods, improvisation, time management skills, ensemble skills and more. Above all, Nicholas is highly passionate about music, and is eager to share his expertise and experience to help you achieve your piano-playing dreams!

In terms of pedagogical approach, Nicholas endeavours to provide students with a thorough technical foundation and knowledge of music theory and styles, in order that they can play the piano with ease and confidence, and explore the creative and expressive aspects of piano-playing. He tailors the method of instruction to the needs and desires of each particular pupil, and can assist with developing an individualised learning and practice plan to give students the best chance to achieve their goals in a reasonable timeframe.

Accompanist

Nicholas is an experienced vocal and instrumental accompanist available for hire for recitals, performances, exams and auditions. He believes in nurturing creativity in ensemble playing, so you can feel at ease on stage and do your best in performance. Nicholas is also able to lend his expertise in historical performance practices in baroque, classical and romantic music, to coach you in refining your interpretation.

Concert Pianist

Available for hire for performances and events. Nicholas specialises in the performance of music of the nineteenth century on modern and historical pianos.

Lecture-Recitals

Nicholas has presented conference papers and lecture-recitals in Australia and in Europe. He is available for hire to give lectures, lecture-recitals and masterclasses on the following topics and related areas:
